The Illinois Department of Transportation and the City of Rockford recently broke ground for the West State Street reconstruction project. The primary purpose of the West State Street Corridor Project is to provide an improved transportation facility along U.S. BR 20 (West State Street) from Kent Creek to Pierpont Avenue. Approximately 150 properties were acquired and about as many structures demolished to make way for the project, which includes construction of curb and gutter, new driving surface, sidewalks, multi-use path, and landscaping. In addition, West State Street, from Kent Creek to Pierpont Avenue, will be turned into a five lane cross section that includes a landscaped barrier median.

One of the establishments affected by the changes is Banner of Truth International Church. SOUL caught up with Head Pastor Philip Williams to find out more about how the church plans to maintain. The pastor has responded in a way that allows everyone to have church despite being forced to temporarily shut down the location at West State Street.

Banner of Truth International Church has its main location at 1401 West State Street, but due to the reconstruction, the church has temporarily moved Sunday services to the University of Illinois Rockford, located at 1601 Parkview Drive in Rockford, Illinois.

The new location has great advantages. According to Pastor Williams, church members are able to find the location easier and there is handicapped accessibility throughout the new facility. “We knew it would be pretty challenging for our church members to navigate to our west campus during all of the road construction, so this has been a wise move for us,” he said. The move is temporary, however it is part of Banner of Truth’s vision to plant multiple congregations in the Rockford area.

“The Lord’s church is not a building, the Lord’s church is the assembly of believers!” said Pastor Williams. “The new location is beautiful, handicapped accessible and has state-of-the-art A/V systems,” he added.

Church service hours are every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and Live Streaming of services starts at 11:00 a.m. For more information, visit their website at http://www.banneroftruthinternational.com/ or call the church office at 815-968-0026.
