Royce Dixon starts conference to empower young men

boys to men conferenceRockford native Royce Dixon saw a need in the community that wasn’t being met. To fix that problem, he is starting The Boys To Men Leadership Conference for young boys, middle school age and older, to educate them on a variety of topics. Dixon sees the importance of empowering young men so that they can take back their lives and not become a victim of the environment.

The Boys to Men Leadership Conference will discuss variety of topics from sexually transmitted diseases, violence, gangs and drugs and feature guest speakers, empowering advice and life changing discussion.

“I decided to put this conference together for a number of reasons. One being I saw a need that I felt wasn’t being met. Every day we hear about some young man or woman being either shot or killed and I don’t want to see that happen to anyone else,” said Dixon. “Second reason is that since I have started working downtown, one question I always hear is “What is your highest level of education? ” and often it’s the same answer 9th or 10th grade. Hardly ever do I hear anyone say that they graduated high school. Third I just want to try to help someone else – To make a difference.”

The conference will feature guest speakers, a roundtable discussion with community role models, and a question and answer session. Confirmed speakers include Mr. Antwaun George aka DJ Rated AG who works at the Winnebago County Health Department, Judge Ronald White from the 17th Judicial Circuit of Winnebago County, and a surprise guest speaker. Parents and guardians who bring their sons, nephews, cousins, neighbors, etc. are encouraged to stay so they can reinforce what is learned at the conference at home.

According to Royce, he is praying that when people leave the conference, they will open their eyes bigger, better and brighter for themselves. “I want them to have a discussion with their parents or guardians on how to make some changes in their lives in order to make the transition from BOYS TO MEN,” he said. “I would like for them to see themselves not as the world might see them, not as a statistic, but as a leader with a bright future.”

The Boys to Men Leadership Conference will be held on July 27, 2013 at the Booker Washington Community Center from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Lunch Provided, Admission is FREE

As the first of many events, there are hopes of this Boys to Men conference becoming a yearly event. Details of a September event are already being discussed, as well as getting to the point of hosting field trips and more opportunities for young men to learn about what you can achieve in life.
