The Saint Xavier University Athletics Department named Rockford native and SXU student, Shane Zackery, the 2012-2013 Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Zackery was recognized at the 2013 SXU Student-Athlete Awards Banquet Wednesday evening to honor 86 student-athletes for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom.
Student-athletes recognized have maintained at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) through December 31, 2012, and each received either a bronze, silver or gold medallion as their award based on their respective GPA. Zackery is finishing up his major in business administration and helped lead the Cougars to the semifinals of the 2012 NAIA Football Championship Series. He led the team with 80 catches for 1,122 yards and 13 touchdowns as well as being named to the 2012 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Class, which made up the 15 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy that recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
